Chapter 9 — Claire Apologizes Without Asking for Forgiveness
Claire did not see Emma alone again for several weeks.
Michael made that boundary clear.
Claire accepted it.
She did not argue that she was family.
She did not accuse Michael of punishment.
She had broken his trust.
More importantly, she had frightened Emma.
When Michael eventually allowed a supervised visit, Claire arrived carrying nothing.
No gifts.
No candy.
No attempt to buy forgiveness.
Emma sat beside Michael.
Claire crouched several feet away.
“I need to tell you something.”
Emma hugged Bunny.
Claire continued.
“I told you Daddy might not want you anymore.”
Emma nodded.
“That wasn’t true.”
“I know now.”
Claire swallowed.
“I knew I didn’t have a reason to say it when I said it.”
Michael watched carefully.
Claire did not say:
You misunderstood.
She did not say:
I only meant…
She did not hide behind intention.
“I wanted you to come with me.”
“You said Grandma would take me.”
“Yes.”
Claire’s eyes filled.
“I made you scared so you’d do what I wanted.”
Emma frowned.
“That’s mean.”
Claire nodded.
“It was.”
“Daddy wants me.”
“Yes.”
Claire looked toward Michael.
“Your daddy loves you.”
Emma asked:
“Did he make Mommy leave you?”
Claire shook her head.
“No.”
Then she said the sentence she had avoided for years.
“I was angry at myself for not going into Mommy’s wedding.”
“You were outside?”
Claire nodded.
“I was scared.”
“Of Grandma?”
“Yes.”
Emma thought about that.
Then:
“You should’ve gone inside.”
Claire laughed through tears.
“I know.”
“Mommy had a chair.”
Claire looked toward Michael.
He had apparently shown Emma the seating chart.
“Yes.”
“With your name.”
Claire nodded.
“With my name.”
Emma looked at her for another moment.
Then returned to coloring.
Claire did not ask:
“Do you forgive me?”
That was not Emma’s responsibility.
The apology belonged to Claire.
Forgiveness could come later.
