Chapter 7 — Zoe’s Mother Comes to the School
Rachel Miller arrived that afternoon.
Zoe sat beside her.
Marcus explained everything again.
Rachel’s reaction surprised him.
She was not grateful.
She was furious.
“You told me the school found assistance.”
Marcus nodded.
“I did.”
“You did not tell me you were taking money out of other students’ accounts.”
“No.”
Rachel looked toward Daniel.
“I’m so sorry.”
Daniel shook his head.
“You didn’t do anything.”
“My daughter benefited.”
Arthur stepped in.
“That still doesn’t make the decision yours.”
Rachel looked toward him.
Arthur continued.
“You asked the school for help.”
“The director chose an unauthorized way to provide it.”
“Those are separate things.”
Rachel nodded slowly.
Zoe looked toward Emma.
“I don’t want to play if your money paid for me.”
Emma frowned.
“But we’ve practiced forever.”
“That’s not fair.”
Emma thought about it.
Then asked Daniel:
“Can we give it to her now?”
Everyone looked toward Emma.
“Give what?”
“The two hundred dollars.”
Daniel almost smiled.
“That isn’t quite how it works.”
Emma looked confused.
“Why?”
“Because first the school has to return every family’s payment to the correct account.”
Then:
“After that, if people want to help somebody, they can choose.”
Emma looked toward Zoe.
“I choose.”
Zoe’s eyes filled again.
Rachel covered her mouth.
Arthur smiled.
“There.”
Marcus looked toward him.
Arthur said:
“That’s the difference.”
Permission.
Emma wanted Zoe beside her.
Daniel agreed to contribute.
Noah’s family did too.
Lily’s father also volunteered.
But nobody allowed Marcus simply to leave the old transfers in place.
The accounting had to be corrected first.
Then new voluntary contributions could be recorded properly.
Helping someone did not require pretending the original wrongdoing never happened.
