Chapter 5 — The Night Melissa Left Seabrook
Melissa finally told Jason the story she had avoided for decades.
That final summer at Seabrook, she was twenty.
Mark was twenty-two.
He worked on the marina crew.
They had been together almost ten months.
Mark received an apprenticeship offer in Charleston.
He wanted Melissa to move with him.
Melissa wanted to go.
Her father, Frank, strongly opposed it.
Not because Mark was cruel.
Not because he was dangerous.
Frank simply thought Melissa was abandoning college plans for a relationship.
The argument became enormous.
Melissa felt trapped between them.
Then Mark made his own mistake.
During an emotional argument, he said:
“If you don’t know whether you want this life with me, maybe I should leave without you.”
Melissa interpreted it as an ultimatum.
She walked away.
That same evening, Frank arrived unexpectedly at Seabrook.
He convinced Melissa to return home immediately.
“I didn’t even finish my shift.”
She packed.
Left before midnight.
And never returned to Staff Room 4B.
Mark apparently came looking later.
Found her room empty.
Then left the letter in their old hiding place.
He expected Melissa might return before sunrise.
She never did.
Jason looked stunned.
“Did you call him?”
“The next day.”
The employee housing office told Melissa Mark had already checked out.
His Charleston address wasn’t yet available.
She wrote one letter to his parents’ house.
It came back two months later.
RETURN TO SENDER — MOVED.
Melissa kept the returned envelope for years.
“And that was it?”
She looked ashamed.
“Almost.”
Several months later, Melissa discovered she was pregnant.
Jason’s expression changed.
“Did you try again?”
Melissa looked down.
“No.”
“Why?”
Her answer was painfully simple.
“Because by then I had convinced myself that if Mark wanted me, he would have found me.”
