Chapter 9 — Grant Returns to Field 4
Grant did not ask Noah to forgive him immediately.
He did something more useful.
He contacted the current Riverton Youth Sports board.
The old 2010 incident records still existed.
Noah’s removal from the program was documented.
Reason:
Suspected involvement in missing equipment.
No finding of theft.
No evidence.
Just suspicion.
Grant submitted a signed statement.
It explained exactly what he had done.
He had moved the bag.
Noah had not.
The board corrected the archived record.
Noah initially laughed when he heard.
“I’m twenty-three. I’m not applying to Little League again.”
Rebecca smiled.
“That’s not the point.”
Noah knew.
The correction mattered because the old accusation should never have remained attached to his name.
Grant also resigned from an honorary alumni position at the sports complex.
No one demanded it.
He chose to.
Then he asked Noah whether there was anything else he could do.
Noah thought about it.
“Yeah.”
“What?”
“Come to Field 4 on Saturday.”
Grant looked confused.
“Why?”
“We’re cleaning it.”
Henry’s former players and volunteers planned to restore the neglected practice area.
Grant arrived at 7:00 AM.
No suit.
No committee badge.
Work gloves.
For six hours, he repaired fencing and carried broken benches.
Noah worked beside him.
They barely spoke.
That was fine.
Trust did not need to return in one dramatic conversation.
Sometimes accountability looked like showing up…
then continuing to show up.
