Chapter 8 — Helen’s Apology Finally Reaches June
The high-school reunion took place four weeks later.
Claire brought the bracelet.
She also brought Helen’s handwritten note.
Michael came with her.
So did Emma.
June was standing near an old yearbook display when Claire recognized her.
White hair.
Green scarf.
Same bright eyes as the teenager in the photograph.
Claire approached slowly.
“June?”
She turned.
“Claire.”
For a moment, neither knew what to do.
Then Claire held out the black jewelry box.
June stared at it.
“Is that…”
Claire opened it.
The bracelet sparkled inside.
June’s expression changed.
Not anger.
Not excitement.
Something closer to exhaustion.
“I haven’t seen that since I was seventeen.”
Claire handed her Helen’s note.
June read slowly.
Helen had written:
June, if this ever reaches you, I want you to know that I found the bracelet exactly where you suggested I look.
Then:
You told the truth.
And finally:
I am sorry that being my friend cost you your good name among people who should have known you better.
June stopped reading.
Her eyes filled.
Claire whispered:
“She never found you.”
June nodded.
“I moved a lot.”
Then:
“And eventually I stopped wanting to be found.”
Claire understood.
Some apologies arrive so late that the person who owes them is gone.
But that did not make the words meaningless.
June folded the note carefully.
“I’d like to keep this.”
Claire smiled.
“It’s yours.”
