Chapter 9 — The Bracelet Was Never June’s
Then came one final surprise.
Claire asked June about the initials.
“J.M.”
June smiled.
“That’s why Helen became even more convinced.”
At seventeen, June Mercer also noticed the engraving.
Helen thought it proved something.
Maybe June knew the bracelet.
Maybe it had somehow belonged to her family.
But June had never seen it before the dance.
Years later, Claire traced the antique shop where Helen’s mother purchased it.
The original shop no longer existed.
But the local historical society preserved several old sales catalogs.
One photograph showed a nearly identical bracelet.

“We spent fifty years attaching a story to two letters that belonged to somebody else.”
Michael smiled.
It was almost absurd.
The initials.
June holding Helen’s purse.
The missing bracelet.
Every clue seemed to point in one direction.
Except none of them proved theft.
Helen had combined coincidence with fear and treated the result as certainty.
Claire looked toward Emma.
That was exactly why what happened in the kitchen mattered so much.
Emma had been near the jewelry box.
Claire was hiding something.
Michael unexpectedly arrived.
Claire panicked.
And the fastest explanation available was:
Emma took it.
It was easier than telling the truth.
