Chapter 1 — The Name Under Daniel’s Seat
Daniel arrived at the elegant reception holding his invitation proudly.
The ballroom inside the Grand Riverton Hotel was already filling with guests.
Soft music played near the stage.
White flowers covered the tables.
A large sign near the entrance read:
RIVERTON COMMUNITY SERVICE HONORS — 50TH ANNIVERSARY DINNER.
Daniel handed his invitation to the attendant.
“Table 17.”
The attendant checked the seating chart.
Then frowned.
“I’m sorry.”
Daniel smiled.
“Problem?”
“That seat is already assigned.”
Daniel laughed nervously.
“There has to be a mistake.”
His invitation clearly stated:
DANIEL REED — TABLE 17, SEAT 4.
A senior staff member named Marcus stepped over.
“Let’s check the actual table.”
Daniel followed him into the ballroom.
His older cousin, Margaret Ellis, walked beside him.
Margaret was one of the people being honored that evening for forty years of community volunteer work.
“I told you these events are always chaotic,” she joked.
They reached Table 17.
Daniel immediately saw his name.
DANIEL REED.
The place card sat beside the water glass.
“See?”
Marcus picked it up.
Then paused.
Something white was visible beneath it.
Another card.
He slowly pulled it free.
A completely different name was printed across it.
SAMUEL VALE.
Margaret stopped breathing for a second.
“Where did you get that?”
Marcus looked confused.
“It was underneath his place card.”
Margaret took one step backward.
Daniel looked at her.
“You know Samuel Vale?”
She didn’t answer.
“Margaret?”
Her eyes remained fixed on the card.
Finally she whispered:
“He isn’t supposed to be here.”
Daniel frowned.
“Why?”
Margaret looked toward the ballroom entrance.
“Because Samuel Vale disappeared from our family thirty-two years ago.”
Then Marcus checked the underside of the hidden card.
A handwritten message had been added in blue ink.
IF MARGARET COMES, DO NOT REMOVE THIS SEAT.
