Chapter 7 — The Locket Was Never Stolen
Margaret could not let the locket remain unresolved.
Her mother, Eleanor, had died fifteen years earlier.
But Margaret still had several boxes of her belongings.
The next morning, Daniel helped her search.
Receipts.
Photographs.
Old birthday cards.
Then Margaret found an envelope labeled:
JEWELRY REPAIRS — 1991.
Inside was a receipt from a jeweler in Riverton.
Item:
Gold heart locket — hinge repair and chain replacement.
Date received:
Two days before Robert accused Samuel.
Margaret stared at it.
“No.”
Daniel read the receipt again.
The locket had never been missing.
Eleanor had taken it to a jeweler for repair.
Why didn’t Robert know?
Another handwritten note provided the answer.
Eleanor wrote:
HIDE REPAIR FROM ROBERT — anniversary surprise.
Margaret sat down.
The locket was intended to be repaired before Robert and Eleanor’s twenty-fifth anniversary.
Eleanor apparently wanted to surprise him by wearing it.
Then Samuel disappeared before the anniversary arrived.
The locket came home.
Life moved on.
Nobody connected the events.
Margaret brought the receipt to Robert.
He read it silently.
Then sat down.
For thirty-two years, Robert had believed one remaining piece of evidence justified what he did.
It didn’t.
The cash was Peter’s theft.
The jewelry pouch belonged to Samuel.
The locket had been at a repair shop.
Samuel had stolen nothing.
Robert whispered:
“I destroyed that boy’s place in our family over three things I never properly checked.”
Margaret looked at him.
“He wasn’t just a boy in the house.”
Robert’s eyes filled.
“I know.”
