Chapter 4 — Maya Had Brought the Ring
Maya stopped when Thomas called her name.
She slowly turned.
Twenty-six years old.
Dark hair.
Green dress.
And an expression that immediately told Thomas she knew exactly what was happening.
Richard walked toward her.
“Did you check in under Lucas Cole’s invitation?”
Maya nodded.
“Yes.”
Thomas held up the jewelry box.
“Did you leave this?”
Another pause.
“Yes.”
Thomas’s anger returned.
“Where is your father?”
“At home.”
“So Lucas never came?”
“No.”
“Then why use his name?”
Maya looked toward the ring.
“Because I wanted Grandma to get it back without Dad having to walk into a room where you’ve spent six weeks telling people he’s a thief.”
Thomas’s face changed.
“I did not tell people—”
Maya interrupted.
“You told me.”
Then:
“You told Aunt Claire.”
“You told Richard there was a serious reason Dad couldn’t attend.”
“And you told Grandma you’d let him come only after he returned something he never stole.”
Thomas went silent.
Emily looked toward Maya.
“How did you reactivate the invitation?”
Maya looked embarrassed.
Her friend Sophie worked for the foundation’s event contractor.
Maya told Sophie Lucas’s invitation had been removed during a family argument.
Sophie believed Eleanor wanted Lucas there.
Which was true.
So Sophie used her guest-services code to restore the invitation.
Richard closed his eyes.
“Fantastic.”
Maya immediately said:
“Don’t blame her. I asked.”
“I’m going to discuss unauthorized guest-list changes separately.”
Then Richard pointed toward the ring.
“Why leave this at reception?”
Maya had planned to give it directly to Eleanor.
Then she saw Thomas standing beside his mother.
She lost her nerve.
She didn’t want another public argument.
So she left the box near registration hoping Richard would return it to Eleanor as lost property.
“And the receipt?” Thomas asked.
Maya looked directly at him.
“Dad told me to leave that inside.”
“Why?”
“Because he knew you’d eventually see the signature.”
Thomas held up the paper.
“This proves he had the ring.”
Maya shook her head.
“No.”
“It proves he repaired it.”
Then she pointed toward the receipt.
“Read the line above the signature.”
Thomas looked down.
He had missed it.
Small handwriting beneath the repair description:
AUTHORIZED BY OWNER: ELEANOR COLE.
