Chapter 6 — Lucas Had Made One Bad Decision Too
Thomas was clearly wrong about the theft.
But Eleanor refused to turn Lucas into a perfect victim.
“Your brother made this worse too.”
Maya looked toward her grandmother.
“Grandma.”
“He did.”
Eleanor explained.
Three days after Thomas first demanded the ring, Lucas called her.
“Your other son thinks I’m a jewel thief.”
Eleanor laughed.
She assumed Thomas would calm down once she told him the ring was safe.
She told Lucas:
“Let him be dramatic for a few days. Don’t spoil Lily’s surprise.”
Lucas agreed.
That was the mistake.
They underestimated how far Thomas’s suspicion would go.
Then Lucas discovered his gala invitation had been canceled.
At that point, he should have called Eleanor immediately.
He didn’t.
Instead, he became angry.
He told Maya:
“If Thomas thinks I’m a thief, he can explain the ring to Mom himself.”
Lucas collected the repaired ring from the jeweler.
Then kept it locked in his home safe.
For almost two weeks.
“Why?” Thomas asked.
Maya answered:
“Because Dad was angry.”
Thomas shook his head.
“So while I was looking for it—”
Eleanor interrupted.
“You were not looking for it.”
Thomas looked at her.
“What?”
“You knew I told you it was safe.”
Thomas went quiet.
Eleanor continued.
“You were looking for proof Lucas had done something wrong.”
That landed differently.
Thomas thought about it.
She was right.
Once Eleanor said not to worry, the reasonable response would have been to wait.
Instead, Thomas kept asking:
Why won’t Lucas admit he has it?
Every strange response became evidence.
Every silence became guilt.
Lucas then responded with equal stubbornness.
If Thomas was determined to suspect him…
Lucas would not help him feel correct.
So one brother accused.
The other withheld.
And a surprise gift became a family crisis.
