Chapter 5 — Why Elliot Had Aaron Removed
Elliot asked to move the conversation away from the service counter.
They entered a quiet meeting room.
For the first time, Elliot explained his side.
The guest restriction had not started with the argument about Ruth’s independence.
It started three months earlier.
Ruth was preparing to sell the family house.
Elliot handled most of the paperwork.
Aaron hated the idea.
He believed Ruth was being pressured.
One afternoon, Aaron arrived while a real-estate photographer was working.
He ordered the photographer to leave.
Then changed the lock code.
“You changed Mom’s locks?” Noah asked.
Aaron sighed.
“Temporarily.”
Elliot laughed.
“This family uses that word whenever committing something ridiculous.”
Aaron believed he was giving Ruth time to reconsider.
Ruth was furious.
She had decided to sell the house herself.
The property had become too difficult to maintain.
Aaron had assumed Elliot was forcing the decision.
He never asked Ruth directly.
That incident destroyed what little trust remained between the brothers.
Weeks later, when the arts foundation asked Elliot for his guest list, he added one instruction:
Do not admit Aaron under my sponsorship.
“Why?” Harrison asked.
Elliot looked toward his brother.
“Because every family event had become a fight.”
“So you solved it by banning me?” Aaron asked.
“I wanted one evening where Mom wasn’t stuck between us.”
Aaron laughed bitterly.
“You removed one of her sons from an event she cared about without asking her.”
Elliot stopped.
Aaron continued:
“You keep saying I make decisions for Mom.”
Then:
“What exactly do you call that?”
Elliot had no immediate answer.
The uncomfortable truth was becoming obvious.
The brothers were opposites in style.
But they shared one habit.
Both believed that when they were certain they knew what was best…
asking permission became optional.
Aaron changed a house code.
Elliot changed a guest list.
Aaron used Elliot’s identity to reclaim the reservation.
Both called their decisions protection.
Neither had asked Ruth what she wanted.
Until Ruth made her own plan.
