Chapter 6 — What Carol Put Inside
The silver case clicked open.
No cash.
No jewelry.
No secret contracts.
Inside were dozens of small cards.
Different colors.
Different handwriting.
Some folded.
Some stained with coffee.
At the top was Carol’s note.
Evan read aloud:
If Mark is standing there, make him stay until you’re finished.
Mark looked down.
Below that:
I was wrong about part of what happened.
Carol explained that after Mark left, she decided to reconstruct the voucher records herself.
She expected to prove he had been careless.
Instead, she found something else.
Customers had been leaving anonymous notes with their prepaid vouchers for years.
Messages like:
This one is for whoever needs breakfast tomorrow.
No questions.
Please give this to a parent with kids.
Use it even if they forgot the paper voucher.
Mark had not invented his approach from nowhere.
Many donors explicitly cared more about feeding someone than perfect paperwork.
But Mark had still violated the system by recording vouchers inaccurately.
Carol wrote:
I was right that the records were wrong.
Then:
I was wrong about why.
Mark closed his eyes.
Carol had continued investigating.
She spoke privately with people Mark had helped.
Some agreed to write anonymous notes.
The cards inside the silver case came from them.
One read:
My husband had just lost his job. Mark gave my children breakfast for three weeks and never made me explain in front of them.
Another:
I had a voucher, but I was too embarrassed to use it. Mark just put coffee in front of me and said somebody had already paid.
Another:
He did break your rules. He also made sure nobody felt like charity.
Harrison sat down.
He had never known the scale.
Then Evan reached the final note.
Carol had written:
But Mark, don’t turn this into proof that you were right about everything.
Mark almost laughed.
That sounded exactly like her.
