Chapter 9 — Harrison Changes the Voucher Program
Carol’s silver case changed more than one relationship.
It changed the bakery.
Harrison reviewed the meal-voucher program.
Mark had been right about one thing.
The old process was too rigid.
People sometimes needed help without wanting to explain why in front of strangers.
Carol had been right about something too.
A kindness program still needed accountability.
Otherwise nobody could know whether donations were being used as promised.
So Harrison rebuilt it.
Customers could still purchase standard vouchers.
But they could also contribute to a general prepaid breakfast pool.
Employees were allowed to use the pool discreetly.
No names required.
No personal explanation required.
Only a simple daily count.
Harrison called it:
CAROL’S COUNTER.
Mark objected immediately.
“She would hate having her name on it.”
Evan laughed.
“Exactly why we’re keeping it.”
Lena agreed.
Inside the staff area, Harrison framed one sentence from Carol’s letter:
HELP PEOPLE WITHOUT TURNING THEM INTO A SECRET YOU HAVE TO LIE ABOUT.
Mark stared at it for a long time.
Then smiled.
“She got the last word.”
Harrison laughed.
“She planned this very carefully.”
Evan and Lena also began repairing their relationship.
Not because Carol ordered them to.
Because they finally understood how much of their distance came from adopting sides in an argument that was never as simple as either side believed.
Evan had thought supporting Mark meant betraying Carol.
Lena had thought criticizing Mark meant ignoring what he had done for people.
Both ideas were wrong.
Mark had helped people.
Mark had also handled the system badly.
Carol had good reason to be angry.
Carol had also wrongly assumed his secrecy meant he was exploiting the program.
Two things could be true at once.
That became the real inheritance inside the silver case.
