Chapter 8 — Maya Finally Gets Her Apology
While everyone focused on Carol’s letters, Maya quietly picked up her black bag.
Ryan noticed.
“Maya.”
She turned.
“What?”
Ryan looked embarrassed.
“I’m sorry.”
Maya waited.
Ryan continued.
“I saw you near the counter.”
“Yes.”
“Then the case disappeared.”
“Yes.”
“And I decided that was enough.”
Maya nodded.
“You did.”
Ryan looked toward Harrison.
“I should have checked the tracker first.”
Maya shook her head.
“Even before that.”
Ryan frowned.
“What?”
“You should have asked what happened without announcing that I stole something.”
Ryan nodded.
“You’re right.”
Then he said something more important.
“You don’t have to accept my apology.”
Maya looked at him.
“I appreciate that.”
Harrison stepped forward.
“Maya, I’m sorry too.”
She looked surprised.
“You didn’t accuse me.”
“No. But this happened in my business.”
Harrison had trained employees to act quickly when high-value property disappeared.
But not carefully enough.
The bakery’s policy said employees should preserve video and contact a manager.
It did not authorize searching customer belongings.
Ryan had overstepped.
Harrison made that clear.
Maya finally smiled slightly.
“Good.”
Then she looked toward Mark.
“And you.”
Mark sighed.
“I knew that was coming.”
“You could have prevented all of this by walking through the front door.”
“Yes.”
“Instead you dressed like a delivery guy.”
Mark looked embarrassed.
“The rain jacket was mine.”
“That is not the part making this weird.”
For the first time all morning, everyone laughed.
The tension broke.
But the lesson remained.
A sympathetic reason did not turn a bad decision into a good one.
