Chapter 1 — “It Was Already Broken”
Little Noah was crying when Vanessa angrily held up her cracked phone.
A spiderweb of broken glass spread across one corner of the screen.
“You dropped my phone.”
Noah shook his head desperately.
“I didn’t.”
“Noah, stop.”
“I didn’t!”
His father, Michael, heard the crying from the hallway and hurried into the kitchen.
He immediately picked Noah up.
“What happened?”
Noah wrapped both arms around his neck.
Vanessa held up the phone.
“Look.”
Michael frowned.
“How did that happen?”
“Ask him.”
Noah buried his face against Michael’s shoulder.
“I didn’t break it.”
Vanessa pointed toward the kitchen counter.
“The phone was there.”
“I came back and found Noah standing beside it.”
“Then I picked it up and saw the screen.”
Michael looked directly at her.
“Did you actually see him drop it?”
Vanessa hesitated.
“No.”
“Then why are you saying he did?”
“Because he was right beside it.”
Noah lifted his head.
“It was already like that.”
Vanessa sighed.
“Noah.”
“I saw it!”
Michael rubbed his son’s back.
“Okay.”
Then Noah suddenly looked over Michael’s shoulder.
He pointed toward the ceiling.
“Camera.”
Michael turned.
A home-security camera covered most of the kitchen.
“Good idea.”
Vanessa looked frustrated.
“Michael, seriously?”
“Yes.”
He opened the camera application.
The recording showed the kitchen counter at 3:06 PM.
Vanessa’s phone was sitting near a fruit bowl.
Noah was nowhere in sight.
Michael fast-forwarded.
3:11.
3:14.
The phone remained untouched.
Then at 3:18, something was different.
A crack was clearly visible across the screen.
Noah still had not entered the kitchen.
Michael slowed the footage.
At 3:21…
Noah appeared.
He walked toward the counter.
Saw the phone.
Leaned closer.
Then stepped backward.
He never picked it up.
Never dropped it.
Never touched it at all.
Michael paused the recording.
“It was already broken.”
Vanessa’s face fell.
“I swear… I thought—”
Michael looked toward Noah.
The little boy was still crying.
“He told you.”
Vanessa went silent.
Noah hadn’t been crying because he broke her phone.
He had been crying because he kept telling the truth…
and nobody had believed him.
Then Michael noticed something else in the video.
Several minutes before the crack appeared, the shelf mounted above the counter moved.
Only slightly.
But enough.
“Wait.”
He rewound the footage.
“What just fell?”
