Chapter 6 — Vanessa Apologizes Without Saying “But”
Before bedtime, Vanessa went to Noah’s room.
He was lining toy cars across the carpet.
She sat beside him.
“Can we talk?”
Noah looked up.
“Phone?”
“Yes.”
She took a breath.
“You told me you didn’t break it.”
He nodded.
“And I didn’t believe you.”
Another nod.
“You also told me the shelf was moving.”
“Twice.”
Vanessa almost smiled.
“Twice.”
Then:
“I didn’t believe that either.”
Noah pushed one toy car forward.
Vanessa continued.
“I was wrong.”
She almost said:
But you had broken things recently.
She stopped herself.
That explanation belonged in her own reflection.
Not inside Noah’s apology.
“I’m sorry I blamed you.”
“I’m sorry I kept telling you that you did something after you told me you didn’t.”
Noah looked toward her.
“You believe me now?”
Vanessa nodded.
“About the phone, yes.”
He thought about that.
Then asked:
“Every time?”
Vanessa smiled gently.
“I’ll listen every time.”
“Does that mean I’ll always think you’re right?”
Noah shook his head.
“No.”
“Because sometimes you really do knock over mugs.”
Noah smiled.
“Mug was me.”
“I know.”
Then Vanessa said:
“But I need to check what happened before I decide.”
Noah nodded.
That seemed fair enough.
Then he handed Vanessa one of his toy cars.
“You can have red.”
In Noah’s world, apparently that was progress.
