Chapter 7 — The Contractor Finds a Bigger Installation Problem
Evan returned the next morning with a wall scanner and new hardware.
This time, Michael watched.
So did Vanessa.
Noah watched too from a safe distance.
“First,” Evan said, “I’m checking everything we installed last week.”
Not just the shelves.
A towel rail.
A small entryway hook system.
A decorative mirror.
Most were secure.
Then Evan checked a narrow hallway cabinet.
He stopped.
“This one too.”
Michael frowned.
“What’s wrong?”
Two upper anchors were incorrect.
The cabinet had not started moving yet.
But eventually it could have.
Vanessa stared.
“That’s beside Noah’s coat hooks.”
Evan nodded.
“We’re removing it until I remount it.”
The cracked phone had revealed a broader installation mistake before anything more serious happened.
Evan called his assistant in front of Michael.
Not to humiliate him.
To make sure the mistake was understood.
Trevor admitted he assumed the supplied anchors were universal.
He had never installed that specific shelf model before.
“Why didn’t you ask?” Evan said.
Trevor answered honestly.
“I didn’t want you to think I didn’t know what I was doing.”
Vanessa looked toward Michael.
The sentence felt familiar.
Trevor had hidden uncertainty because he feared looking incompetent.
Vanessa had turned uncertainty into accusation because she feared admitting she did not know what happened.
Different situations.
Same instinct.
Embarrassment first.
Truth later.
Evan told Trevor:
“Not knowing is fixable.”
Then:
“Pretending you know is how things end up on the floor.”
Noah looked toward Vanessa.
“Like phone.”
Michael laughed.
Vanessa nodded.
“Exactly like the phone.”
