Chapter 2 — Something Fell From Above
Michael enlarged the recording.
At 3:16 PM, the kitchen was completely empty.
Vanessa’s phone sat beneath a newly installed wall shelf.
The shelf held cookbooks, a small ceramic bowl, and a heavy wooden recipe holder.
Then the shelf suddenly tilted.
Not much.
Perhaps half an inch.
But the wooden recipe holder slid forward.
It fell.
One corner struck Vanessa’s phone.
The phone flipped against the countertop.
The recipe holder landed on the floor outside the camera’s lower frame.
Several seconds later…
the shelf shifted back slightly.
Michael paused the footage.
Vanessa stared.
“That broke it?”
“Looks like it.”
Michael walked toward the shelf.
He put one hand against it.
The entire thing moved.
“Vanessa.”
She stepped closer.
“What?”
Michael pressed again.
The left side lifted away from the wall.
“This is loose.”
Noah suddenly spoke from Michael’s arms.
“I told Mommy.”
Vanessa looked toward him.
“What?”
Noah pointed.
“Shelf moves.”
Michael looked at Vanessa.
Her expression changed again.
“When did he tell you?”
She didn’t answer immediately.
Then remembered.
Two mornings earlier.
Noah had been eating cereal when he pointed toward the new shelf.
“Mommy, that moves.”
Vanessa barely looked.
She told him:
“Then stop touching it.”
Noah insisted he had not touched it.
Vanessa was busy making coffee.
She assumed he must have been pulling on the shelf.
“Did you check it?” Michael asked.
Vanessa shook her head.
“No.”
Michael looked toward Noah.
The little boy had warned her.
And she had turned the warning into another accusation.
