Chapter 6 — The Second Photograph
The archive sent digital previews the following morning.
Rachel opened them with Robert and Ava sitting beside her.
The first image was the familiar photograph.
Everyone posed carefully.
Evelyn smiling.
Helen upright.
Young Rachel standing still.
Michael on the porch step.
Then Rachel opened the second image.
She started laughing.
Everyone had moved.
Michael was looking away.
Helen was reaching toward Rachel’s hair.
Robert, much younger, was caught mid-sentence.
And Evelyn was laughing so hard her eyes were nearly closed.
Rachel stared at her grandmother.
“I’ve never seen this.”
Robert leaned closer.
“Neither have I.”
Then came the third photograph.
A young Rachel had broken pose completely.
She was turning toward Evelyn.
Evelyn had one hand extended toward her.
Everyone else was laughing.
The picture was imperfect.
And somehow more alive.
Ava pointed.
“Mommy looks like me.”
Rachel smiled.
“A little.”
Robert looked toward the damaged original sitting inside a protective sleeve.
His mistake had accidentally led the family to two photographs they had never known existed.
For half a second, he felt relief.
Then he stopped himself.
He was not going to turn that into justification.
Finding the other photographs did not make blaming Ava acceptable.
It only meant something good had been discovered afterward.
Robert looked toward Ava.
“Can I show you something?”
She nodded.
He placed the original beside the new image.
“See the pink line?”
“Yes.”
“Finding these other pictures doesn’t mean it was okay that I blamed you.”
Ava looked at him.
“Okay.”
Robert continued.
“Sometimes people say ‘everything worked out’ and act like that makes what they did before okay.”
Rachel looked toward him.
That was more honest.
Ava asked:
“Is everything worked out?”
Robert smiled faintly.
“The picture part might be.”
Then:
“The Grandpa part still needs work.”
