Chapter 7 — Helen Gets the Truth Before the Gift
Robert originally planned to hide everything from Helen until her birthday.
After the camera incident, he changed his mind.
He visited her that afternoon.
Rachel and Ava came too.
Helen opened the door.
“Why do all three of you look guilty?”
Ava immediately pointed toward Robert.
“Grandpa did it.”
Robert sighed.
“Thank you for the introduction.”
Helen frowned.
Robert handed her the original photograph.
She saw the pink line.
Her mouth opened.
“Robert.”
“I know.”
“What happened?”
Robert told her everything.
He had borrowed the photograph.
Made a copy.
Mixed them up.
Marked the original.
Panicked.
Then blamed Ava.
Helen’s expression changed at that last part.
“You blamed her?”
Robert nodded.
“Yes.”
“Knowing you did it?”
“Yes.”
Helen looked furious.
Robert did not defend himself.
He did not tell her how much pressure he felt about the surprise.
He did not say he only panicked for a minute.
He did not mention the newly discovered photographs until after he finished explaining the accusation.
Helen crouched beside Ava.
“Did Grandpa apologize?”
Ava nodded.
“A lot.”
Helen looked toward Robert.
“Good.”
Then Ava added:
“Camera caught him.”
Helen’s eyebrows rose.
Robert groaned.
“I am never escaping this.”
“No,” Helen said.
Then Rachel showed her the two newly discovered photographs.
Helen’s expression softened.
She stared at the picture of Evelyn laughing.
“Oh my goodness.”
Her hand covered her mouth.
“Mom.”
Rachel sat beside her.
Helen had not seen her mother’s laugh captured like that in decades.
Robert watched quietly.
The birthday surprise was gone.
Helen knew everything.
But the moment was still meaningful.
Maybe more meaningful because nobody was pretending.
